What is Functional Health?

Functional health looks at how and why illness occurs and addresses the root causes of disease to restore health.

Did you know...?

  • 50% of adults have at least one chronic health condition

  • 25% of adults have 2 or more chronic health conditions

  • 86% of healthcare costs are due to chronic disease

Let's take headaches as an example...or, to be more specific, "chronic migraine". This was my chronic illness in my 20s. I had always had "headaches" which were "normal" in my family. But, in 1993, on January 3rd to be precise, I got a headache that did not stop for 3-1/2 years! We could talk about this spiral and the treatment I received when the doctors couldn't find one cause, but let's fast forward to the end of the story. Through functional health including chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback training, nutritional modifications, and emotional awareness, I was able to address the root causes (there were many) and regain my health and my life.

The diagnosis of "chronic migraine" and "fibromyalgia" did not exist when I was going through my health struggles. But that doesn't matter. They are just names. Usually, a name is given to a condition to drive a treatment protocol which is usually a pharmaceutical approach. In the world of headache treatment, this approach was like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if any of it stuck.

In the end, there was not one cause, but many. However, if I was to boil it all down to one word, it would be INFLAMMATION. Functional health looks at the root causes that lead to inflammation that leads to chronic pain and illness.

What is the takeaway here? It is that by finding and managing the root causes of chronic illness, you can achieve better health.
